The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published advice as part of its ongoing Drive & Survive programme to help motorists deal with the dangers of ice over the coming winter months.

According to the road safety organisation, all vehicle owners should ensure they have a scraper and de-icer in their car before setting off on any journey.

In addition, it is important for drivers to be aware of the difficulties of setting off on icy roads, with motorists advised to release the clutch and accelerate gently, while avoiding high revs in order to stop wheel spin.

IAM head of training Simon Elstow commented: "When the roads are icy the best advice is to drive as if you're walking on eggshells. Be prepared for the worst – icy conditions can affect accelerating, steering and braking."

Last month, the IAM advised UK vehicle operators to prepare their cars for the winter by carrying out a few simple checks.

It advised checking tyre tread depths are above the legal minimum of 1.6 mm, as well as topping up engine coolant and antifreeze levels if required.
