The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice to road users on how best to respond to emergency vehicles as part of its ongoing Drive & Survive road safety initiative.
According to the organisation, drivers should avoid pulling on to kerbs, pavements or verges to make room for emergency vehicles as they could contain hazards or put pedestrians at risk.
Furthermore, while looking for a safe place to pull over they should aid their concentration by turning off the radio or any music they have playing.
IAM head of training Simon Elstow commented: "Emergency vehicle drivers want you to help them reach the emergency at hand as quickly as possible. Behave calmly … and move out of the way as soon as it is safe to do so."
Last month, the IAM published research revealing how 74 per cent of UK drivers routinely allow vehicles to pass emergency vehicles to pass them.
However, it also showed that the majority of Brits are unaware they could face fines for breaking red lights or entering active bus lanes in order for them to do so.
