Road safety charity Brake has applauded proposals from the Liberal Democrats for the widespread introduction of more 20 mph zones on routes across the UK.
The news follows overwhelming support for the plans at the Lib Dem party conference this week, with members keen to push forward with significant government investment in a bid to bring down accident rates in built-up areas.
"Slowing down to 20 [mph] gives drivers far more chance to react in an emergency and avoid hitting someone, significantly reducing the threat posed to the most vulnerable road users," commented Brake deputy chief executive Julie Townsend.
Plans for the initiative will now be passed on to the Department for Transport, which will work alongside local authorities to implement more low-speed zones.
Earlier this month, Ms Townsend also announced her support for the publication of research from the British Medical Association, which claimed that safer roads across the country would have significant benefits for levels of public health.
