The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice to UK drivers on how to stay safe when travelling on country roads.
According to IAM head of training Simon Elstow, more vulnerable road users are likely to be taking to the roads over the summer months and therefore drivers should cut their speed when travelling in rural areas.
In addition, he argued the 60 mph speed limit is a maximum not a target and people need to tailor their speed to the driving conditions.
Mr Elstow commented: "Ask yourself, can you stop in the distance you can see to be clear? And have you anticipated the approaching vehicle or junction hidden around the bend?"
Last month, the IAM called for a rethink in the design of crash barriers on the UK's roads, with further thought being given to the safety of motorcyclists.
Data compield by the organisation revealed that motorcycle riders are 15 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries than car occupants when running into crash barriers.
