The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice as part of its ongoing Drive & Survive initiative to those looking to purchase a used car.
According to the organisation, research is key to avoiding a dodgy deal, as people should always ensure they receive a full service history for any prospective buy, as well as turning over the engine and listening for any noises that could represent a possible problem in the future.
Other issues people should be aware of are blown turbo chargers, snapped timing chains and smoking engines – all of which can be the result of any previous owners' failure to carry out a regular oil change.
Head of training at the IAM Simon Elstow commented: "Do your preparation before you go so you know what you're looking for. If you're not confident take a friend, get it checked at a garage, or ultimately walk away."
Last month, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed the UK's new car market saw significant gains in June, with a 3.5 per cent increase in registrations taking place during the month.
