The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered advice to UK drivers regarding what to do when faced with flash flooding.

As a result of the ongoing heavy rainfall that is being seen across numerous parts of the UK at present, the prospect of flash flooding is now very real on many routes.

The IAM has therefore advised drivers take a position on the highest point of the road when traversing flooded areas, while they should also go slowly and leave plenty of time and space between other vehicles in their vicinity.

Furthermore, in deep water drivers should never take their foot off the accelerator, as this could allow water to travel up the exhaust.

"When driving in wet conditions remember that stopping distances will increase and visibility will be reduced. Drop your speed and give yourself more time to slow down," commented IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger

Earlier this week, the organisation also advised UK motorists to leave plenty of space and not to make sudden movements or noises when faced with horses and their riders on the roads.
