Companies using temporary staff may need to be aware that these workers could pose greater risks to their fleets.

It was noted by road safety charity Brake that agency personnel are more likely to be involved in collisions than other employees, so this may be a key area for businesses to address as 42 per cent of firms use such staff as drivers.

Therefore, its Fleet Safety Forum division has published a new guide for fleet managers on how to manage these individuals.

It offers clear, straightforward advice on areas such as explaining a firm's policies, vehicle checks and ensuring agency staff are subject to the same screening processes for issues such as drug and alcohol use as permanent workers.

Development manager at Brake Roz Cumming said: "Managers must approach this proactively and ensure drivers provided by recruitment agencies are appropriately qualified and receive the same training as their own staff."

The charity recently held its tenth annual Fleet Safety Forum Awards for Excellence at an event in Birmingham, which presented prizes to firms that have shown a strong commitment to safety.
