The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is partnering with vehicle telematics provider MyDrive Solutions to help UK motorists be safer behind the wheel.

It is hoped that by promoting the use of telematic devices to insurers, the organisations will help shift the industry's focus from aspects such as age and gender to individual driving abilities when setting premiums.

Frances Richardson, RoSPA's operations director, said: "With help, most people can improve their driving and given the information on where they are falling short … people can adapt their style with the benefit of reducing the accident rate."

Earlier this month, RAC patrolman Prakesh Patel argued the introduction of telematics devices for young drivers in particular could be extremely beneficial in helping this group to lower their insurance costs.

In addition, he claimed it would help them to be better drivers, as the device records information regarding all aspects of their motoring and feeds this data back to their insurer.
