The rules surrounding the use of red diesel on Northumberland's roads could be relaxed as farmers are urged to help out with gritting.

Red diesel, which is highly regulated in the UK, is not normally allowed to be used on Britain's roads. But the rules preventing its use are stopping the local authority in the region from mounting an effective road safety strategy.

Farmers wishing to help out tackle icy roads will be able to do so once the rules are relaxed.

However, HM Revenue and Customs officials claim that flexibility is the key to tackle the problems posed by poor weather so the rules will not be side-stepped unless there is a prolonged period of bad weather. Particularly if public services such as schools and hospitals are affected.

Any relaxation of red diesel tax rules will be posted on HM Revenue & Customs' website.

Recently, Sainsbury's car insurance warned that a huge number of drivers in the UK don't know what to do if their car starts skidding in icy conditions.
