Driving in reverse appears to be problematic for many motorists and results in millions of pounds worth of vehicle damage every year.

According to new figures from Accident Exchange, motorists driving in reverse cause £409 million worth of damage – with a total of 200,000 accidents clocked up by motorists travelling backwards.

The organisation claims that as shopping stress ramps up in the run-up to Christmas and delivery firms make more drops, the number of accidents goes up.

Lee Woodley, of Accident Exchange, suggested that the modern gadgets found in new vehicles could be, in part, to blame.

"Accidents can and always will happen, but perhaps drivers are mollycoddled by their vehicles too much these days – it is easy to become over reliant on technology, pampered by their vehicle's cosy, quiet environment," he added.

Recently, the Institute of Advanced Motorists warned drivers about the dangers of getting behind the wheel after festive drinks – even if motorists are planning on driving the following day.
