A number of Scottish roads have had to be closed as winds reached 90 mph in some parts and heavy rain caused localised flooding.

The closures follow the Met Office's decision to upgrade the wind warning to amber for large swathes of the country – including many coastal areas.

Haulage firms were particularly badly affected, with transport chiefs shutting the Forth Road, Erskine, Tay and Skye bridges to lorries.

Commenting on the action plan put in place by ministers to tackle the problems caused by high winds, transport minister Keith Brown said: "The Scottish government's resilience team are monitoring the situation as it develops and standing by to step up emergency response arrangements as necessary."

Earlier this year, Brake's Fleet Safety Forum published new guidance for fleet drivers taking to the road in bad weather such as fog or high winds.
