New research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has highlighted the shocking extent to which some drivers may be losing concentration when out on the roads.

According to a survey carried out by the organisation, 40 per cent of motorists admit to not having their mind completely on the road when out and about, with young drivers – those aged 18 to 24 – the worst offenders (50 per cent).

Signs of a lack of concentration for drivers include missed turnings and uncancelled indicators.

IAM chief executive Simon Best commented: "Simply not concentrating is a key cause of crashes yet it is not borne out in statistics because drivers rarely admit to it in police reports or on insurance forms."

He added the key to remaining safe when out on the roads is to build up extensive experience and to view driving as a skill that requires continual improvement.
