The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has added its voice to calls for the chancellor George Osborne to introduce lasting fuel duty cuts in his upcoming Budget.

According to FTA managing director of policy and communications James Hookham, the high price of petrol and diesel in the UK is a continuing constraint on economic recovery and therefore a reduction in taxation would provide a considerable boost for the whole of the country in the months ahead.

"The chancellor would give a real boost to balancing the economy by reducing fuel duty by 3p per litre," he stated.

Freight and logistics businesses in particular would benefit from such an announcement, as a large proportion of monthly costs for the sector currently relate to fuel and keeping vehicles on the road.

Any decision to cut fuel duty would therefore be welcomed, especially as the chancellor has already committed to halt the impending fuel duty increase that was due to come into effect from September 1st.
