The UK automotive sector is set to benefit from a significant government cash injection to facilitate greater global competition in the manufacturing supply chain.

UK-based suppliers will receive a portion of a new £45.5 million investment as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) placing a successful bid for £13.3 million on behalf of the automotive industry.

Used to provide new and innovative approaches in a range of areas, including R&D, quality assurance, cost reduction and staff development, the funds are to be divested among 38 automotive sector suppliers by the SMTT and will aim to ensure the industry is operating at maximum efficiency over the coming years.

Dave Allen, chair of the Supply Chain Group of the Automotive Council, commented: "The UK automotive supply chain has some real opportunities for growth in the coming years and this programme will really benefit those looking to improve their competitiveness."
