The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed the sharper focus that is now being directed at the debate over future tolls for the Severn Bridge.
Following a call from Newport East MP Jessica Morden in the House of Commons for improved transparency over the future of the bridge when it comes into public ownership from 2018, the government is now being urged to clarify how the change will impact users in the years ahead.
The debate highlighted serious concerns by the Labour MP regarding the impact of future tolling on all road users in the area, particular those in the logistics and haulage profession.
Ian Gallagher, FTA head of policy for Wales and the south-west, said: "To ask users to continue to pay for infrastructure which has been paid for many times over is fundamentally wrong."
He stated that instead, tolls should continue to be in place, but only at a level designed to cover the ongoing repair and upkeep of this important structure.
