Businesses and fleet managers across the UK have been urged to ensure they have appropriate licence checking systems in place to guarantee compliance for all drivers on their books.

According to the Licence Bureau, 5.42 van, fleet and truck drivers out of every 1,000 in the UK could have an issue with their licence and the organisation has therefore published a checklist businesses can employ to better ensure compliance among their staff.

Malcolm Maycock, managing director of the Licence Bureau, explained: "The aim is to highlight the growing problem to companies of failing to audit employees' current driving and vehicle documents."

The measures firms are advised to put in place include checking and rechecking individual's details regularly, with the main reasons for failure highlighted as expired provisional licences, disqualifications, revoked endorsements and licences being surrendered.

It is hoped that by focusing more closely on licence issues such as those listed above, companies can ensure they do not incur costly fines and sanctions as a result of inaccurate driver information.
