Businesses, educators and members of the public of all ages in Yorkshire are being invited to head along to a road safety session being organised in their area by charity Brake.
Working in partnership with insurer Marmalade, the road safety organisation is putting on an event on June 24th that will target young people in particular, encouraging them to have a greater awareness when it comes to their responsibilities as motorists.
Taking place as part of the ongoing 2young2die campaign, the session will be open to children as young as 11, as it looks to prepare the next generation of road users for the likely situations they will face when driving.
As part of the initiative, all attendees will have the chance to take part in roundtable discussions with community leaders, instructors and members of the emergency services, as they are given an insight into the dangers of failing to take road safety seriously.
All participants will be educated regarding what Brake believes to be the six core principles of road safety.
These are for all motorists to stick within speed limits at all times, be free from the intoxicating effects of drugs and alcohol, have good eyesight and be alert, ensuring mobile phones are switched off and out of reach and that individuals are belted up, as well as road users being aware of their responsibilities to the environment, by only driving when they have to.
Dave Nichols, professional engagement officer at Brake, commented: "Road crashes are the biggest cause of disability and death among young people. It is vital that we reach young people – whether or not they are drivers themselves – before it's too late.
"This course provides tools to help trainers to make a real impact and end the carnage – I urge anyone who wants to act to keep young people safe to attend."
All those who head along to workshops and discussions on the day will also be given free access to Brake's literature and publications on road safety, ensuring they are able to leave the event with not only a better understanding of road safety, but also enabling them to act as ambassadors for this message to their peers and loved ones.
The latest road traffic accident data from the Department for Transport showed that during the 12 months to the end of September 2013, 1,730 people were killed on the UK's roads. Moreover, a total of 23,380 people either lost their lives or were seriously injured in traffic accidents over the same period.
While these figures represent an annual reduction of two and six per cent in each of these important measures, the considerable number of people still being affected by road traffic incidents remains a cause for concern and further action is therefore required to spread the message of road safety awareness.
Crispin Moger, managing director for young driver insurance provider Marmalade, stated: "Education is a key part of improved safety on our roads."
