The Highways Agency has announced it will be completing or suspending the majority of roadworks on the UK's major roads and motorways in time for the upcoming bank holiday weekend.
In total, 75 per cent of the agency's maintenance schemes will be taken off the roads by the end of Friday (May 23rd), meaning drivers across the country will face fewer areas of congestion as a result of ongoing roadworks.
Up to 180 miles of road maintenance schemes will be completed in time for the weekend deadline, while a further 145 miles of projects will be put on hold.
As a result, 98 per cent of the nation's major routes will be unaffected by traffic management schemes over the long weekend.
Director of traffic management at the agency Simon Sheldon-Wilson said: "To help road users enjoy this bank holiday weekend – and hopefully some fine weather – we will be completing or suspending over 320 miles of road works on motorways and major trunk roads.
"But we still ask people to plan their journeys by making use of the traffic information services we provide."
Friday evening and Saturday afternoon are predicted to be the periods when the largest volumes of traffic will be taking to the nation's roads, as many Britons embark on getaways to make the most of the extra day off work.
Full details of schemes that will be completed and suspended can be found at the Highways Agency website, while motorists are advised that some lane restrictions and temporary speed limits will remain in force across the bank holiday weekend – 38 such schemes have been announced by the agency.
When faced with these potential delays to their journey, road users are advised to always stick to reduced speed limits and to be aware of vulnerable agency staff that will still be working in these areas.
