Vehicle safety organisation TyreSafe has announced its support for this year's UK Road Safety Week, which will be taking place June 9th to 15th.

Organised by the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), the event aims to highlight the importance of acting responsibly to all road users across the country, ranging from car owners to motorcyclists and pedestrians to bike riders.

Chairman of TyreSafe Stuart Jackson commented: "TyreSafe already has a great relationship with many fire services and local road safety partnerships thanks to their participation in Tyre Safety Month, so we are delighted to extend this collaboration further and lend our support to Road Safety Week."

The event is being supported by some of the UK's leading road safety organisations and bodies, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the Department for Transport (DfT), Road Safety GB and the RAC Foundation.

It has now added TyreSafe to this list of illustrious names and the organisation is encouraging all road users, but drivers in particular, to regularly check the state of their tyres to ensure they are not courting disaster by driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

The minimum tread depth for tyres in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central two-thirds of their circumference, as below this level vehicles can begin to lose essential grip that can affect both handling and braking, leading to an increased risk of individuals becoming involved in an accident.

According to the latest road casualty statistics from the DfT, the economic welfare costs of collisions on roads across the UK costs the economy £16 billion each year, while insurance claims for motorists alone are now valued at in excess of £12 billion.

Meanwhile, road collisions account for more than one-quarter of all deaths in the 15 to 19 age group and are the leading cause of death for young people aged from 15 to 24 in the UK.

As such, it is imperative that all drivers are aware of their responsibilities every time they get behind the wheel of a vehicle, as 11 per cent of UK adults stated in 2012 that they had been involved in some form of road traffic accident in the preceding three years.

Moreover, in 2012, five per cent of all children across the country had been involved in an accident in the last three years, with two per cent suffering an injury.

The CFOA event aims to spread the message that road safety is not an issue that can be ignored and that it is up to every driver, cyclist, bike rider or pedestrian to obey the rules of the road to safeguard the lives of not only themselves, but also those around them.

A range of events will be taking place across the UK during the upcoming UK Road Safety Week 2014, with the overriding message of this year's event being "be safe out there".
