The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published a range of tips to help ensure all car owners understand the importance of sharing the road safely with its more vulnerable users.

A growing number of cyclists and motorcycle riders will likely be seen taking to the nation's roads over the coming months due to the increasing popularity of cycling in particular and improving weather across the UK.

It is therefore essential that all drivers bear in mind the danger they can pose to these groups, as their vehicle can be a moving weapon if used irresponsibly.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "The most common cause of road accidents is 'failed to look properly' – and this oversight is being made by all kinds of road users.

"We all need to look out for each other to stamp out these avoidable collisions."

As a result, the IAM has published a range of tips to help motorists to reduce the risk they pose to other road users, with one of the most important being the need to have one's wits about them at all times.

Always be aware of the fact that cyclists and motorbike riders can get into areas where cars cannot, so regularly check mirrors and blind spots to be fully aware of what is going on around your vehicle.

In addition, leave plenty of room when overtaking and following these vehicles, as getting too close can cause bikers or motorcyclists to become unstable – increasing the likelihood of accidents.

In heavy traffic, drivers should also not attempt to hinder the progress of cyclists or riders as they weave their way through – just because your vehicle is stuck does not mean you have to hinder the progress of others.

"Most road users don't just use one mode of transport, so use the knowledge you have from the others to practise a bit more patience and understanding of those around you," Mr Rodger concluded.
