As part of efforts to improve safety for motorists ahead of the winter taking hold across many parts of the UK in the coming weeks, breakdown and recovery specialist GEM Motoring Assist has issued advice to UK drivers on how to drive safely in fog.

GEM chief executive David Williams has issued some tips on safer driving when faced with this particular adverse weather, highlighting the need for road users to have their wits about them at all times, as fog can cause a serious hindrance to visibility.

Fog is created when the temperature of the air drops to a point at which the moisture in it condenses to form thick clouds of mist. It is primarily witnessed during the colder and wetter months of the year, as it requires the air to be heavily laden with moisture for it to develop.

Individuals should reduce their speed accordingly when faced with severely limited visibility in foggy conditions, while they should also remember to turn on their fog lights to help to both improve their own visibility and ensure they are more easily spotted by other road users.

In extremely thick fog, Mr Williams argued there really is no magic solution that can help drivers to see further, so the only real advice that he can give is for individuals to proceed as slowly as possible and to always be on the lookout for potential hazards up ahead and from behind.

"It's dangerous to follow the lights of the vehicle in front, as you may well allow yourself to get too close, meaning you might not have enough space to stop suddenly," the GEM chief concluded. "You can follow the edge of the road as a reference point, but not the centre."
