The whole point of a fuel card is to save money and time: to reduce refuelling costs and to cut the administration workload. Fuel cards are not all the same, though, and nor are fuel card suppliers. Even picking the right fuel card, but from the wrong supplier, can be an expensive error.
Matthew Haskins, one of The Fuelcard People, explains that spotting the right supplier is easy. “Just ask what happens if you have an account query,” he says. “With the right firm, you always call the same person. You have a dedicated account manager, who knows and understands your business. You get straight to the point and they provide immediate help. Excellent service should be standard.”
With the wrong fuel card company, it doesn’t work like that. You call the main number, then press the appropriate button for the required department. You might just have to listen to music, but you might also have advertisements to tolerate. Eventually, a random call centre operator answers. You might have spoken to them before, but you probably have to start by explaining who you are and, possibly, all about your business. They might understand right away. They might even have the knowledge, experience and authority to help you, rather than referring you to somebody else. It all depends upon your luck.
“You should be able to expect excellent service whenever you call,” says Matthew Haskins. “If a fuel card company will not give you a dedicated account manager, it shows how much they value your custom. You should not have to enter a call centre lottery and waste time explaining who you are.”
