The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has called upon the government to provide clarification regarding the implementation of the new Apprenticeship Levy in relation to the freight sector.
FTA skills policy development manager Sally Gilson stated: "It is important that the Apprenticeship Levy does not become another business tax and that levy payers have access to suitable, fully-funded apprenticeships for all age groups."
As such, the body hopes to receive reassurance that funds will be made available for apprenticeships and other vocational training for businesses operating across the logistics industry when the new scheme is introduced in April.
The move comes at a time when the need for drivers, technicians and engineers across the industry is stronger than ever, especially given the potential impact of the UK's decision to leave the EU, which could limit the number of foreign professionals coming in from abroad in the years ahead.
Ben Robb, brand manager at the Fuelcard People, adds: "Tackling the ongoing significant skills shortage within the freight industry is one of the most pressing issues facing operators at present.
"Providing clarification on the new Apprenticeship Levy should go some way towards making this a reality."
