Up to 18 million UK motorists claim to have seen potholes on local roads in their area but have failed to report them, according to new data published by the AA.

The results of the latest AA/Populus poll reveal that just 14 per cent of drivers across the country report these hazards when they are spotted, with one in five over-65s doing so, but just five per cent of motorists aged between 18 and 24 following suit.

AA president Edmund King commented: "Councils keep an eye on the condition of their roads but driver feedback is essential for identifying sudden deterioration or a problem on more minor roads."

He added that if more drivers reported these hazards then local authorities would be under more pressure to improve road conditions in their area.

According to last month's AA/Populus report, 50 per cent of AA members believe that road conditions across the UK have worsened over the last 12 months.
