Millions of drivers could still be over the drink-driving limit on New Year's Day, depending on how much they drink the night before according to new research.

The AA Driving School revealed that 21 per cent – equating to 7.5 million drivers – expect to have consumed ten units of alcohol by 02:00 BST. This means they're at risk of being over the limit by midday on January 1st.

More than one in ten young drivers (18-24 year olds) reckoned they would consume up to 16 units of alcohol as part of their New Year's Eve celebrations, meaning they could still be over the limit until 18:00 the next day.

Jim Kirkwood, managing director of the AA Driving School, said: "Knowledge about the risks of drink driving is generally fairly good, but this is not the case when it comes to the risk of drivers still being over the limit the morning after drinking."

Mr Kirkwood advised anyone intending to drive as part of their New Year's Day plans to avoid excessive drinking the night before.
