The AA has issued a response to yesterday's (March 20th) Budget announcement by the chancellor, stating the decision to scrap the planned fuel duty increase in September is "good news".

AA president Edmund King said: "A September fuel duty hike would have been the last straw likely to break UK drivers' budgets and would have led to a summer of discontent."

He added that scrapping the fuel duty hike is a "pragmatic move and will bring some relief at the pumps".

Mr King went on to state that the present high cost of fuel in the UK has resulted in 76 per cent of the organisation's members claiming they are cutting back on the number of journeys they make in order to reduce their petrol and diesel expenditure.

Data recently published by the Department for Transport revealed January witnessed a 23-year low in terms of fuel consumption in the UK, with motorists purchasing 1.465 billion litres of petrol during the month – 14 million litres less than the previous record low.
