While no-one would wish it to happen to them, there is always the chance that motorists will be involved in an accident, whether it is their fault or not.

And to be prepared, a spokesperson for the RAC Accident Care Team has advised drivers that in the event of a crash, they should always remain calm and exchange details with any other parties involved.

He commented: "People often forget to obtain witness details as all the emphasis is on the people involved but this could be crucial if there are any later disagreements on who was at fault."

Furthermore, drivers should take photos of any damage to their vehicle or others if they have a camera phone.

Last month, the Institute of Advanced Motorists advised UK drivers to expect an increase in the number of cyclists being seen on the roads in future, given the extraordinary achievements of British cycling in the Tour de France and London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
