The UK automotive sector recorded an impressive 16.2 per cent increase in production volumes last month, new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed.
According to the organisation's data, a total of 91,282 cars were produced across the country in August – 12,705 units more than in the corresponding month of 2012.
This was the third successive month of improvements across the manufacturing sector, driving overall production for the year to date to 984,545 units – up 3.1 per cent on the same period last year.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, commented: "Despite August typically being one of the year's quietest months due to summer breaks, the past 12 months has been the most productive [period] since late 2008."
He added UK-based design and engineering expertise is giving global car manufacturers the tools required to expand their model ranges and deliver some of the most innovative, dependable and modern vehicles on the market.
