The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has claimed the UK's automotive sector could provide a significant boost to the economy, providing the government acts on a number of its recommendations.
Details of the statement included a call for the creation of 'Low Carbon Vehicle Catapult' to encourage investment in future R&D within the sector, as well as calls for a stronger UK voice in Europe in order to help stabilise the region.
In addition, the government was urged to reaffirm its commitment to the low-carbon vehicle sector.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt commented: "Growing our manufacturing base and rebalancing the economy must be a national priority for all areas of government and all political parties."
The news follows recent data from the SMMT highlighting a 12.5 per cent upturn in the number of vehicles produced in the UK to the end of August in comparison to the same period last year.
