Better driver awareness is required to make sure all road users are safe.
This is according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the body is concerned after statistics showed an alarming increase in the number of pedestrians and cyclists (33 per cent and nine per cent respectively) killed in 2012.
While overall road deaths dropped by six per cent – this forms part of a 43 per cent decrease over the last decade – these road users are seemingly under increasing danger.
Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, said: "We need to redouble our efforts to make sure [they] do not pay the price of more walking and cycling, especially as the improving economy results in more road traffic."
He added the road should be a "safe and attractive" place for pedestrians and cyclists, so he would like to see more 20 mph schemes introduced.
