Road safety charity Brake has welcomed the news that transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin is set to scrap plans for raising the motorway speed limit in the UK to 80mph.
Ellen Booth, senior campaigns officer at Brake, said: "We welcome this indication that plans for 80mph limits will be ditched and congratulate the transport secretary for the strength of this commitment to road safety."
However, Ms Booth added that the government should go further and cancel any trials of the raised limit.
She claimed that even a trial of higher speeds has the potential of increasing the risk of serious accidents on the UK's roads.
The news follows the recent publication of research from the AA, which revealed how up to ten per cent of current road users in the UK do not know the legal motorway speed limit is 70mph.
It found that up to 250,000 motorists may be breaking the law without even realising it, as they mistakenly believe the limit to be 80mph.
