Road safety charity Brake has welcomed the introduction of new fixed penalties for individuals found to be driving recklessly on the UK's motorways.

Serious careless driving offences including tailgating and not wearing a seat belt will now be subject to these on-the-spot fines.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: "It's crucial we encourage greater respect for laws on our roads, which are in place to protect people's lives, and higher fines can help achieve this."

She added, however, that a £100 fine is not sufficient deterrent for dangerous drivers and therefore the government should seriously consider increasing this amount to provide a greater boost to road safety across the country.

Director of policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists Neil Greig also supported the introduction of these new fines, stating the fixed penalties will help to free up the time of stretched police forces, enabling them to focus on more serious crime.
