Individuals looking to purchase a used car in the UK have been advised to be wary of scammers.

Used car fraud is a growing problem across the country, with eager buyers falling victim to unscrupulous scams, which look to draw in unwary buyers by offering extremely low prices, but the cars do not actually exist.

This is known as the 'escrow con', whereby the fraudster will ask potential buyers to transfer money to a third party before viewing the vehicle.

Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager at HPI, commented: "If a seller asks for payment before the buyer even sees the vehicle, this is cause for serious concern. It's easy to be swayed by a rock bottom price, but no bargain is worth the risk."

The news follows the publication of recent data from British Car Auctions, highlighting a "hardening" of the UK's used car market over recent months.

It showed that headline average used car prices diminished by 0.7 per cent in March to £7,000.
