The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has highlighted the change in careless driving laws that came into force this week (August 16th).

Instances where individuals are visibly distracted – causing them to swerve or drive erratically – will be covered by the new rules.

Police forces will now have the authority to hand out £100 fixed penalty notices for a range of new offences, including overtaking on the inside, tailgating, inadvertently breaking a red light at junctions, as well as obvious distraction caused by practices like lighting or selecting a cigarette and tuning the radio while the vehicle is in motion.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "If the police target the worst and most persistent offenders this could be good news for road safety."

However, he added that should the new laws become simply a "numbers game" with haphazard enforcement for offenders, then the impact could be "limited".
