Motorists across the UK have been urged to get their hands dirty and check their tyres regularly, as new data shows up to ten million tyres on the UK's roads could be in a dangerous condition.

A study carried out by Kwik-Fit revealed 83 per cent of motorists do not know how to assess the age of their tyres.

Roger Griggs, communications director at the company, said: "We would recommend drivers consider changing a tyre that's more than five years old, even if it's not down to the legal tread limit."

He added that vehicles that are used infrequently could also face additional tyre wear, as the anti-oxidising chemicals manufacturers build into these items are only effective if tyres are used regularly.

Car owners wishing to check the wear of their tyre can use a simple method to determine if they are legal. They should insert a 20p piece into the tread and if the rim of the coin is obscured then the tyre still has life in it, if not, it needs replacing immediately.
