March is currently living up to its reputation as being one of the most unpredictable months of the year in terms of temperatures and weather, with March 2013 gearing up to be the coldest in the last 50 years.

According to Darron Burness, the AA's head of special operations, the organisation has responded to 900 call outs per hour on average during times when heavy snowfall has hit the UK this month, while blizzard conditions have made many roads across the country impassable.

It is therefore extremely important that Brits ensure they take all necessary safe driving precautions when heading out during periods of ice and snow, as failure to do so can lead to problems.

He advised: "Give yourself a bit more time … as you don't want to be rushing in these conditions – on snow and ice, things can go wrong very quickly."

Earlier this month, the AA's latest Populous Poll highlighted the ongoing perceived deterioration in the state of the UK's transport network, with 40 per cent of respondents stating they believe the roads in their area are "poor".
