Fleet managers planning to send drivers on routes utilising the Thelwall Viaduct have been advised a contraflow system is to be in force for the route over the coming weeks.

The Highways Agency is set to carry out essential maintenance on the structure from the end of the month as part of a £2.5 million project to replace expansion joints on the viaduct's two bridges.

Alan Shepherd, the Highways Agency's director for the north-west, commented: "Regular users of Thelwall Viaduct will be aware the bridge joints have started to fail recently, leading to some disruptive lane closures for emergency repairs.

"This essential maintenance will tackle that but will inevitably increase congestion."

With more than 160,000 vehicles per day using the Viaduct, the works are expected to have a considerable impact on journey times in the area.

They will get underway on February 27th, with all lanes to be narrowed and a temporary 40 mph speed limit for all bridge users to be in force for the duration of the project.
