New research carried out by the AA has revealed the majority of motorists across the UK blame a lack of council maintenance for the recent floods that impacting roads up and down the country.
Overall, 68 per cent of the more than 23,000 respondents who took part in the survey agreed that extreme weather conditions played a major role in flooding, but 67 per cent also stated councils should take some responsibility for a lack of drain clearance.
Keeping on top of transport infrastructure maintenance programmes should now be made a priority for local authorities, as failure to do so is likely to mean a repeat of the hazardous conditions that effectively saw many communities cut off due to flooded routes.
Indeed, AA president Edmund King commented: "Inevitably, after this winter's appalling weather, there will be an enquiry into the resilience of the UK's transport network. Part of that will have to include road drainage."
