Diesel prices in the UK rose to record levels this month, pushing past highs set back in May last year.

According to the latest fuel price data from Experian Catalist, the average diesel price across the UK now stands at 143.05p per litre – moving above the previous high of 143.04p.

"A stronger pound has staved off this moment for longer than might have been expected, but diesel drivers across the country will have been watching in trepidation," commented AA president Edmund King.

He added that the main difference between this latest peak and the record levels seen last year lies in the fact that budgets are now even tighter for many and therefore these price increases may just be too much for many to bear.

Last month, Paul Walters of the AA told the Express & Star that haulage firms across the UK are being priced out of business due to the continuing increase in the amount they have to spend simply to keep their vehicles on the road.
