New figures have highlighted an increase in drink-related serious injuries and deaths on the UK's roads in the UK last year, with road safety charity Brake calling for swift government action in response.
The data showed one in six road deaths – 280 people in 2012 – could be attributed to drink-related accidents and as such, it is now necessary to follow the lead of other nations and take a zero-tolerance approach to this offence.
Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: "We have the highest drink-drive limit in Europe and it sends out the dreadful message that a drink or two before driving is acceptable."
She added every country in Europe bar one has a lower alcohol limit for road users than the UK and it is therefore imperative the government acts now to bring the country in line with its European peers.
Meanwhile, other recommendations put forward by Ms Townsend included greater levels of investment in specific road policing units to tackle drink-driving.
