Fleet operators looking to sell on their vehicles will need to ensure any driver data left on an auto's technology systems is fully wiped.
The Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA) noted devices such as satnav systems, phone kits and in-car entertainment devices can store a wide range of data, such as an individual's phone book or personal addresses.
It therefore noted failure to wipe this information before a car enters the remarketing process is likely to become a growing issue.
Chairman of the VRA John Davies said: "We have yet to see major instances of any personal data being misused if it is inadvertently left on a car's satnav or in-car system, but this won't be the case forever."
He added there could be "real security issues" surrounding this, particularly if a driver has details about a public figure on their vehicle.
Therefore, the organisation has published a best practice guide to help operators deal with this risk.
Recently, the VRA noted the market for ex-fleet vehicles performed strongly in May, with a healthy balance of stock available.
