Fuel consumption is one of the major concerns for haulage company workers – with many striving to drive as economically as possible.

According to a new online survey by the Worldtrucker forum, 50 per cent of its members watch their fuel consumption; and the reason for doing so appears to be twofold.

Firstly, truckers can help protect the environment and slash their carbon emissions by driving in an eco-friendly manner. Secondly, haulage firms can cut their fuel bills considerably.

Worldtrucker claims that 30 per cent of haulage firms' operating costs are down to expenditure on fuel, but with a decent fuel economy policy companies can cut this by as much as ten per cent.

Commenting on the findings, Andrew Low, who heads up driver training at Volvo Trucks, said: "It is important to work on awareness of this issue so that drivers understand that their efforts do make a difference."

For motorists in search of a new vehicle, fuel consumption is one of the key considerations – with 27 per cent looking specifically for an economic vehicle.
