Motorists across the UK have highlighted their concerns regarding the potential introduction of new automatic speed limiter technology for vehicles from the EU.

According to research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), 57 per cent of UK drivers believe the introduction of the proposed Intelligent Speed Adaptations (ISAs) system will fail to help reduce the number of accidents on the country's roads.

The technology works by automatically recognising local speed limits and limiting a vehicle's maximum velocity accordingly.

IAM chief executive Simon Best commented there remains serious concerns over whether this will actually improve road safety and more research now needs to be carried out to demonstrate how ISAs can save lives.

"Unfortunately, over a third of respondents see this as a way of controlling drivers. I believe if drivers are trained properly and have access to on-going learning, the government would not need to enforce ISAs," he added.
