UK vehicle owners have been offered advice by the Institute of Advanced Motorists' (IAM's) head of training Simon Elstow regarding the safe handling of corners.

He noted that drivers should begin by gaining information on other road users and possible obstacles by checking their mirrors.

They should then, after confirming it is safe to proceed, position their car to take the bend. Adjusting to an appropriate speed is important and the driver should only then change gear. Once they can see out of the corner, drivers should accelerate smoothly and complete the manoeuvre.

Mr Elstow said: "Preparation is key with most things in life and cornering safely is no exception. Changing gear or reducing speed once in the bend unbalances the car, which is at best nerve-wracking and at worst dangerous."

Earlier this month, the IAM offered advice on dealing with roundabouts, with Mr Elstow urging drivers to ensure they are in the right lane at all times, as this will help them traverse this type of junction safely.
