UK drivers have been advised to take it easy on their vehicle during the first few days after the festive break, as a lack of running and cold temperatures may have caused batteries to flatten.

According to the AA, a large proportion of motorists will have left vehicles stationary for the duration of the last week or so and this means that when they come to start their engine, there may be little charge.

AA patrol officer of the year Andy Smith commented: "If your car has been left sitting, ideally trickle charge the battery or, if weather conditions permit, take it out before then for at least half an hour to boost the battery."

Indeed, figures from the organisation have shown that January 2nd – the first day back in work for many Brits – traditionally sees a 60 per cent increase in the number of breakdown callouts.

Meanwhile, the AA's annual Streetwatch Survey recently revealed how the problem of potholes on the UK's roads is actually less severe this winter than has traditionally been the case over recent years.
