The latest Motorparc study from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has highlighted the fastest annual growth in the number of vehicles on the UK's roads in 2013.

Rising levels of reliability and an upturn in the purchase of new vehicles has served to drive up the number of cars on the roads by 436,000 vehicles last year, bringing the overall vehicle total to just over 31.9 million cars.

This is a 1.4 per cent rise in vehicle numbers for the year and marks the fastest growth in more than a decade.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, commented: "With more cars bought and less scrapped in recent years, the total number on UK roads reached an all-time high last year."

He added the growing trend to spread the costs of maintenance across service packages has also helped to improve affordability and means owners are holding onto vehicles for longer.
