Some 67 per cent of female drivers do not know how to carry out basic maintenance checks on their car.

Research by Trust My Garage has found two-thirds of ladies would struggle to find out their brake fluid levels, while nearly 50 per cent are not stringent when it comes to monitoring oil levels.

If people ignore small issues with their vehicles, they could turn into something much bigger further down the line.

Jan Lord, business development manager at Ashton under Lyne-based garage GuideBridge, stated she understands how car maintenance can be "bewildering".

"This is exactly why we have developed a process of educating and supporting female motorists in our area – to make them feel relaxed and confident with their own cars," she added.

Drivers are encouraged to check their oil and coolant levels every week and if they need some advice on how to complete the process, they can ask their mechanic.
