Ford's Fiesta has retained its place as the most popular car for cost-conscious motorists, but it faces competition from German manufacturers as drivers look to keep costs down.
This is according to the latest Total Cost of Motoring consumer research charts from CAP Automotive, which is now dominated by brands such as Volkswagen, Audi and BMW.
Although the Fiesta holds on to top spot, six of the the top ten cars are now from German manufacturers, with the VW Golf, BMW 3-Series and Audi A3 among those proving popular among consumers looking to change their car.
Retail and consumer expert at CAP Phillip Nothard explained German brands "enjoy a reputation among motorists for holding their value", adding depreciation is "the biggest drain on your budget over the ownership period of any car".
The Total Cost of Motoring chart tracks enquiries made by consumers to the CAP regarding car models in order to understand the purchase intentions of UK consumers.
