The latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed a significant increase in the average fuel efficiency of new cars in 2013 in comparison to models released in 2000.
According to the organisation's finings, there has been a 25 per cent improvement in this area during the last 13 years, while average CO2 emissions have fallen by 26.5 per cent during this period.
Furthermore, sub-130g/km vehicles now account for more than half of the market, whereas this group made up just 10.6 per cent of models in 2007.
Looking ahead, Matthew Croucher, author of the SMMT report, said: "We are seeing improvement in conventional technologies and the emergence of a range of alternative technologies, creating one of the most innovative periods for the global automotive industry."
Earlier this month, the SMMT also revealed the UK's new car market registered a 12th consecutive month of growth in February, with registrations rising by more than seven per cent year-on-year.
