The boffins at GEM Motoring Assist have offered a number of tips to vehicle owners across the UK who hope to cut their petrol and diesel costs by being more fuel-efficient in the future.

According to the organisation, motorists should remember to shed weight when travelling, while also ensuring tyres are properly inflated to their recommended psi.

Failing to do so can have a dramatic impact on fuel consumption, as a single tyre being under-inflated by 20 per cent can result in a five per cent increase in fuel usage.

"Even as petrol prices aren't currently on the rise, it is always good practice to follow fuel efficient driving and get the most out of a car’s fuel tank," concluded David Williams, chief executive officer at GEM.

The news follows the recent publication of research from British Car auctions, which showed the ongoing high cost of petrol and diesel in the UK is the biggest concern for car owners.
